12 sugar processors must stop production because of material scarcity
Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that since the middle of March, 12 among 40 sugar factories had to halt production for running out of materials (sugarcane). Until the end of this month, there will be total 25 factories being forced to close because of the material scarcity.
In the 2008-2009 crop, the country’s sugarcane plantation area is about 290,000 hectares, down 16,600 hectares from the previous crop. The ministry estimated, the output of pressed sugarcane will be about 10 million tonnes, falling 2.1 million tonnes, while that of industrial sugar will reach 951,000 tonnes, down 198,000 tonnes against 2007-2008 crop.
Total sugar sales between February 15 and March 15 reached 128,700 tonnes, up 60,000 tonnes.
