197 foreigners registered for share trades
According to the HCM City Securities Trading Centre (HSTC), of total 20,345 accounts of investors opened at securities companies to make trades on the stock market, to date only 197 foreigners have accounts.
Presently, foreign investors are very interested in the stock market in Vietnam however because the government restricts securities holdings of foreigners at listed companies at no more than 30%, this makes the stock market less attractive to foreign investors.
This is one of the reasons the stock market is lacklustre.
