In the past decade Vietnam has invested around US$1.3 billion to double its water supply network in urban and residential areas, reported the National Programme on Clean Water and Environmental Hygiene. Of this, around one billion dollars is from foreign investment capital, mostly official development assistance (ODA), which has helped increase the number of residents with access to clean water by 20% in the last five years.

The National Programme on Clean Water and Environmental Hygiene aims to bring clean water to 90% of urban and 80% or rural residents at a level of 60l/Person/Day by 2010.

To reach this target, around 37 trillion dong more in investment is needed.
