A man admitted to the Institute for Clinical Research into Tropical Diseases died from the bird flu on Thursday May 19. The man was from the northern province of Hung Yen and was admitted to hospital last Monday showing symptoms of inflamed lings and renal failure and later tested positive to the bird flu virus H5N1.
The man raises chickens at his farm but there are no reports of bird flocks being infected.
This is the 78th patient in the third bird flu outbreak since December 16, 2004 up to now. At the institute, there are another two infected patients still receiving treatment and one of them from Vinh Phuc province also in the north is showing signs of recovery.
According to doctors, there is a risk of another surge in bird flu in the months ahead as was the case last year when it remerged in July.
