Bird flu re-emerges in four provinces

National steering board for bird flu control reported that bird flu epidemic had returned in four localities of Can Tho, Ben Tre, Dong Thap and Hanoi within July. According to testing results, the rate of poultry whose serum is positive to Virus H5N1 was very high. Especially in Cuu Long river delta, this rate reached 70% of all poultry flocks tested. In the North, the rate was 1.63%, much higher than that in 2004.
The steering board determined to bring ducks, quails, gooses and pigeons into poultry list of bird flu vaccine inoculation next time. The amount of ducks, which have to get bird flu vaccine next time, will be up to 40 million according to estimates.
In the near future, the veterinary institute will carry on vaccine tests on goose flocks. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Mard) said in a statement that it was very necessary for enterprises and big farms to be active in having theirs fowl inoculated with bird flu vaccine as soon as possible to prevent an uncontrolled outbreak of bird flu epidemic.
MoAaRD requested two provinces of Bac Ninh, Thai Binh and 13 other provinces of the Mekong River Delta to be ready to launch an early vaccine inoculation at the beginning of September and in the start of October. The vaccine inoculation would be applied nationwide.
A conference on poultry inoculation in the provinces of HCM City, Long An and Cuu Long river delta’s provinces are expected to held on August 4 in Can Tho.
