Bird flu under control, health authorities claim
The bird flu is well under control in Hanoi with no outbreak reported in the last 25 days and no outbreaks in the southern province of Bac Lieu for 48 days, said the veterinary department under the agriculture ministry on November 20.
Therefore, the number of cities and provinces with reported bird flu outbreaks has reduced to 15 instead of the 17 reported throughout the country at the end of last week.
However, new bird flu outbreaks have been reported in Hai Duong and Thanh Hoa provinces.
The prime minister sent an emergency note to localities on November 20 proposing the emergency vaccination for all poultry flocks and making detailed plan of vaccination campaign for 2006. At the same time, the note called for a tightening of the observation of the bird flu outbreak and strict penalties for violations of illegal transport and trading of any poultry. The prime minister emphasised the need for timely support and compensation for households that had their bird stocks culled by authorities.
At a meeting with the Steering Committee of Bird Flu Prevention of HCM City on November 20, chair of the People’s Committee, Nguyen Thien Nhan gave instructions to local authorities to intensify the measures to bring bird flu under control so not a single household in the city continues to raise birds after November 26. Nhan also instructed that doves should be seized and culled immediately as well. Households raising birds have to cull all birds or take them out of the city no later than November 30.
