Cambodia and Vietnam to increase health surveillance

Cambodian and Vietnamese health officials on Thursday agreed to step up health quarantines and checks in the border areas between the two countries.

The determination to do this came in a bilateral conference on health quarantine in border areas, held in the southern city of Vung Tau, in a bid to ensure health safety for citizens in the two countries and prevent the spread of disease, according to health officials.

At the conference, representatives of the Preventive Medicine Department of Vietnam’s health ministry and the Department of Communicable Disease Control of the Cambodian health ministry reviewed health quarantine activities in the bordering areas in the past years, exchanged information on relevant regulations in each country and discussed solutions to problems.

For the last several years, the spread of infectious diseases in the region has become more and more complicated with outbreaks of dangerous diseases, including Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome), bird flu and dengue fever.
