HCM City authorities have disapproved of a scheme proposed by a consulting firm to develop a stretch of the national railway inside the city centre.
According to the city, the construction of the rail road section from Hoa Hung in District 3 to Tan Kien in Binh Chanh District will end up clearing a large area of residential land and splitting up the inner-city road network, thus adversely affecting people’s lives and the cityscape.
The city will work with the Ministry of Transport and Vietnam Railway Administration to propose developing other means of public transport such as buses and metro lines in line with the approved plans.
Urban railway planning should be in sync with the city’s public transport development scheme. There must be a harmony between railway transport and road transport, the city government said.
The authorities are collecting ideas from related agencies over the scheme and will send them to the central government and the Ministry of Transport.
In the HCM City transport development scheme between now and 2020 with a vision to 2025 approved by the government in 2007, Hoa Hung railway station will be one of the key hubs for both local and regional railroad networks and there will be a national railway leading to Long An Province via the terminal.
However, the city has called for a second thought on the project. If the government develops this railway project, the city’s road transport system will become more overloaded.
The city has suggested relocating Hoa Hung train station to neighbouring Binh Duong Province.
