Crash raises doubts about China’s fast rail plans

Doubts about China’s breakneck plans to expand high-speed rail across the country have been underscored in the wake of a bullet train wreck that killed at least 36 people.

Railways minister Sheng Guangzu has already apologised to the victims of Saturday’s crash and their families. A train rammed into the back of another one that stalled after being hit by lightning.

The Global Times said Monday that the accident should be “a bloody lesson for the entire railway industry in China.”

The China Daily called for better training of railway employees and efforts to make sure the railways are not vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.

The accident is an embarrassment for China, which plans to massively expand its bullet train network.
