Ex-legislator faces prosecution for tax fraud
Vietnamese police are seeking an indictment against a prominent businessperson and former acting city legislator along with six others for evading import, value added and corporate taxes of over US$825,000.
They said Vu Hung Binh, former acting member of the HCM City People’s Council, had founded four limited liability companies which had imported 93 automobiles, some from the Republic of Korea, without paying tariffs of 13.1 billion dong (US$818,750).
Police also said he evaded value added taxes and corporate taxes worth over 133.8 million dong in 1999-2000.
Binh himself pocketed over 8.15 billion dong. He was arrested last May.
Binh had won the Red Star Award for young successful businessperson and the Golden Star awarded to Vietnamese premier brands in 2003.
