Export of bauxite banned
Prime minister Phan Van Khai signed a decision on marking off areas for exploring, mining, processing and using bauxite from now to 2010 and towards 2020, of which the prime minister instructed relevant ministries to ban exporting crude bauxite ore.
Prime minister Khai stated that the bauxite ore is the big resource of Vietnam and is a basis to form a large-scope and synchronous industrial sector in mining bauxite, producing alumina and aluminium, contributing to boosting the country’s industrialisation and modernisation and socio-economic development, especially in Central Highlands.
The prime minister instructed the Ministry of Industry to work with other relevant ministries and sectors in 2006-2010 period to focus on mining bauxite ore in some explored mines, approved quantity in the provinces of Lam Dong and Dak Nong, accelerating the implementation of the alumina producing and bauxite mining complex project in Tan Rai commune, Bao Loc district, Lam Dong province, processing alumina products for exporting with the annual capacity the first stage of about two million tonnes.
In order to mine this solid mineral resource effectively, the prime minister requested the Ministry of Industry to build a scheme to set up the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industry Group based on the state-owned Vietnam Coal Corp (Vinacoal) and Vietnam Mineral Corp (Vimico) to submit to the prime minister for approval in October.
