The health ministry on April 22 said it is planning to submit a decree to the government banning smoking in public areas such as kindergartens, schools, hospital, meeting halls, cinemas, and theatres. Proposed fines for violations range from 50,000 dong to 10 million dong.

Presently, there have been 1.25 billion smokers worldwide.

About 50% of the world’s 1.25 billion smokers are in Asia and every year about 4.9 million people die of smoking-related diseases, according to the World Health Organisation.

In Vietnam alone, around 16,000 people die of smoking-related diseases each year.
