A chicken retailer has offered to payUS$6,000 to anyone who catches the bird flu virus after eating his product. Nguyen Diem, director of Da Nang Export Import Processing Co in the central city of Da Nang, has bought insurance policies on 5,000 chickens, attaching a certificate for 100 million dong ($6,353) to each bird sold.
Consumption of poultry is shrinking in big cities such as Hanoi and HCM City, home to about 10 million people, despite assurances from the World Health Organisation (WHO) that eating cooked chicken is safe.
As Vietnam has banned the import of poultry and poultry products from neighbouring countries, supermarkets and a limited number of western restaurants now offer chicken from Australia and Brazil.
