A foreign vessel, suspected to be an ocean going tanker, fled the scene after colliding a local fishing boat Saturday July 29 in waters near northern Hai Phong city, leaving nine fishermen stranded.
The scene where the accident took place was reportedly 70 nautical miles from Cat Ba town, Do Son district, Hai Phong city.
The boat sank, with two of the nine critically injured, said Tran Manh Hai, head of Hai Phong Frontier Post 54.
The nine were fortunately rescued by another fishing boat and are receiving treatment at a local health centre, Hai added.
Investigations initially produced the identity of the vessel that fled, according to police.
The white vessel had a green cabin, and is believed to still be in Hai Phong territorial waters, police confirmed late Sunday.
