East Timor’s former prime minister Mari Alkatiri has been appointed to coordinate negotiations over the development plan for the Greater Sunrise gas field.

East Timor is negotiating with the oil and gas field’s developer, Woodside Petroleum, over the location of a gas processing plant.

President Jose Ramos Horta has said the development should not go ahead unless the plant is built in East Timor.

Woodside is considering constructing a pipeline to Darwin, or building a floating plant in the Timor Sea.

East Timor will earn 50% of the revenues from the Greater Sunrise field when it is operational.
