Party members will have their work cut out for them as the 14th general Election draws closer, Umno vice president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said. “We must be prepared as if tomorrow is election day. We are in the last mile now and must work together, close ranks and ensure that our focus is not only on the party but also the elections that will happen soon,” Hishammuddin said. This was the message party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak stressed in the pre-council briefing to delegates at the Putra World Trade Centre here, he said adding the prime minister made it clear for everyone to place the party above personal interests. Najib asserted preparations are in place and the party is not about any individuals or certain groups. “It was heartening to see the overwhelming response by delegates attending the briefing,” he said and noted the spirit among delegates were different compared to two years when the party had faced challenges within. Hishammuddin said this in apparent reference to the internal squabble that eventually led to the departure of former deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and several other senior leaders. “This is a good sign as we faced challenges (in the last general assembly) two years ago. So, the message by the president that not only touched on working together and appreciate the different scenario (this year). “At the same time, the president has given emphasis on certain matters that I observed were well-received by the delegates,” he said and reiterated on the need to focus on preparations for the coming elections. “We have to start from now and in fact have already started with our preparations for general elections way earlier. “A lot have been done in this past one year since the presidents dropped hints (on the general elections) last year. We have since carried out preparations,” he added.
