Hamilton woman dies suspiciously in Vietnam
A Hamilton woman backpacking in Vietnam has died and her family is desperately trying to bring her home.
Cathy Huynh was 26-years-old and was teaching in Korea, when she got a week off work and decided to spend her vacation backpacking in Vietnam. She was with her friend Karin Joy Bowerman, 27, who also died.
According to Tuoi Tre, a media outlet in Vietnam, Huynh brought Bowerman to a hospital in Nha Trang on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
Three hours later, Bowerman died of respiratory failure. She had no visible signs of trauma, reports said. Huynh then also became ill and died early Thursday.
Media reports say Bowerman was American.
Tuoi Tre, is reporting that health officials are investigating the possibility that Huynh and her friend died from some sort of poisoning.
Foreign Affairs have no information on the circumstances of their deaths, according to reports from the Canadian Press.
Both Huynh’s mother and brother have travelled to Vietnam.
The family has started a fundraiser to repatriate her body back from Vietnam.
They’ve created a fundraising page with a goal of $40,000, so far they’ve raised over $12,000.
