Hanoi is trying to become “a non-smoking city” and will expand the designated public non-smoking areas, the director of its Health Department, Le Anh Tuan, said Friday.

A Canadian INGO, HealthBridge in Vietnam, said it will provide US$253,000 for a two-year project to carry out the non-smoking policy in offices and public places.

The project will be launched today to coincide with international no smoking day held May 31.

Vietnam is among the top 15 countries in terms of numbers smokers.

A study shows 48% of Hanoians are passive smokers.
