HCM City chiefs discuss economic situation

At a meeting held May 18 to discuss HCM City’s social and economic situation, people’s committee chair Le Thanh Hai said that are still many problems unsolved in the city concerning social and economic improvement such as urban administration, slow compensation and site clearance in construction projects, the slow sales of five high-priced land lots to raise much-needed cash for the city budget, and scant improvement in administrative reform. Of those tasks, the most urgent is to collect 10 trillion dong for developing city infrastructure, which is long overloaded, and for reforming urban management, public service provision which are still not correspondent to new demand.

At the meeting, city people’s committee deputy chair Nguyen Thien Nhan instructed the departments to review and push up the twelve focal programmes; to hold meetings for improving the provision of public services; deputy chairman Nguyen Van Dua instructed prompt completion of procedures for land granting, leasing, change of ownership in city utility and infrastructure construction projects, taking into account the revised Law on Land and Law on Construction which will take effect on July 1.

Focal tasks for the next seven months of the year are the internal shift in the city’s economic structure, mobilisation of capital like issuance of city bonds, auction of land owned by the city, construction of the Thu Thiem bridge over the Saigon river and Thu Thiem tunnel under the river, the East West highway, urban management reform, detailed city planning for the new urban area of Thu Thiem City.

The last two months has seen comparatively high economic growth: 9.2% for services, 16.8% for exports with turnover of US$3.6 billion, 25% increase in tourism with 650,000 visitors, and 14.5% growth in industrial production.
