HK superstar Andy Lau to receive honorary doctorate from Shue Yan University

Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau Tak-wah will receive an honorary doctorate from a local university at a graduation ceremony next month his first from an institution in the city.

On Tuesday, a spokesman from the private Shue Yan University in North Point said that Lau, 56, would be awarded a Doctor of Letters, honoris causa.

Sharing the limelight on that day will be Justice Patrick Chan Siu-oi, a non-permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal, who will be conferred a doctor of laws, honoris causa.

The ceremony is to be held at the university’s Lady Lily Shaw Hall on December 14.

In 2006, Lau, one of the most beloved celebrities among Chinese fans worldwide, was named an honorary fellow by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts for his achievements and contributions to the performing arts.

In 2010, Lau received the 12th World Outstanding Chinese Award and an honorary doctorate of philosophy from Lansbridge University in New Brunswick, Canada, as recognition for his contributions to the entertainment industry.

The actor had been out of action for more than six months after being injured from a fall off a horse while filming a commercial in Thailand in January.

Lau, also a singer and filmmaker, launched his showbiz career in 1981 when he was recruited by broadcaster TVB.

He has been one of the city’s most commercially successful film actors since the mid-1980s, with about 200 movies under his belt.
