Customs officials on Wednesday arrested an Iranian for allegedly trying to smuggle 4.2 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine hydrochloride into Thailand. Authorities at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport arrested Keyvan Ghannavatirajabnejad, 33, who had arrived from Dubai, after discovering the crystal meth hidden in a secret luggage compartment, The Nation online news service reported.
The drug had an estimated street value of 17 million baht (515,000 dollars).
The Iranian told police it was the first time he had smuggled the drug into the country but they had doubts as his passport showed he had entered Thailand at least 11 times previously.
Interpol had tipped off airport customs officials to be on the watch for Iranians attempting to smuggle drugs into the kingdom during the holiday season.
Customs Department chief Somchai Sajjapong said his office arrested 31 people at Suvarnabhumi Airport last year and confiscated more than 52 kilograms of narcotics.
