SK Hynix Inc. said Wednesday that it plans to acquire a US-based chip-controller developer, Link_A_Media Devices Corp., for $248 million as the South Korean chipmaker aims to beef up is flash memory competence to address the fast growing demand for chips used for smartphones and tablet computing devices.

Link_A_Media Devices Corp., a California-based company founded in 2004, is a developer of controllers that interlock with processors to help increase the speed and reliability of NAND flash memory used for various mobile products.

“We expect our NAND Flash competitiveness will be further strengthened by the acquisition of LAMD (Link_A_Media Devices Corp.), which has extensive expertise in controller technology and excellent engineering resources,” SK Hynix CEO O.C. Kwon said in a statement.
