Lawrence S. Ting fund offers scholarships
The Lawrence S.Ting Memorial Fund marked its debut on March 15 with the donation of 140 scholarships to students at a ceremony held at the Municipal Theatre in HCM City’s District 1.
Phan Chanh Duong, director of the fund, said its establishment signified the recognition of the great contribution by Lawrence S. Ting, late chair of Central Trading and Development (CT&D) and Phu My Hung Corp, to the development of Saigon South.
The fund was established following the desire of the late chair as well, said Ting Fei Tsong Ching, chairwoman of the Fund’s Executive Board and spouse of Lawrence S. Ting.
“Lawrence S. Ting, when still alive, expressed a desire to set up a charitable fund. The fund would aim at educating and training young human resources with relevant knowledge for the market-oriented economy… The inauguration of the fund today is the realisation of that desire of my late husband,” she said.
On this occasion, 140 students in HCM City were awarded the Lawrence S. Ting scholarships with a total value of 850 million dong.
At the event, the fund also extends gifts to the northern province of Bac Kan, including 10 compassion houses and education equipment.
The fund is also proceeding with a plan to build a high school with the Vietnamese name of Dinh Thien Ly (Lawrence S. Ting) in Phu My Hung new urban town with invested capital of 40 billion dong. This school is slated for opening in September 2007.
