Leighton bags coal mine project in India

Australia’s construction and contract mining group Leighton Holdings has bagged two contracts worth one billion (Australian) dollars for developing and operating a coal mine project in Jharkhand in India.

Leighton’s subsidiary Thiess would build the infrastructure and then operate the Chitarpur coal project for 20 years, the company was quoted saying in ‘The Age’ on Thursday. The open cut coal mine would have a maximum capacity of 6.75 million tonnes a y ear and would supply coal to steel plants and to a nearby 1,100-megawatt power station, the company said.

“The long term contract between Thiess India and Abhijeet Group creates a solid foundation for the growth of our business in India,” according to Thiess Asia Chief Executive Officer Bruce Munro.

Mr Munro said over 115 million tonnes of coal would be mined over the next 20 years and development work was to begin by the end of this month, with commencing in October 2009.
