A project to produce cell phones at prices ranging from US$5-20 is underway in Vietnam, according to the Post and Telecommunication Equipment Factory (Postef).
Postef, an offshoot of Vietnam Posts and Telecoms Corp (VNPT), would submit the project for the production of mobile phones for the conglomerate’s approval.
The firm plans to purchase technology and production lines from a Korean partner to equip a factory in Hanoi, sources said.
If the project is accepted, Postef would provide the first ever homegrown cell phones to the local market.
Postef is currently the major producer and provider for Vietnam’s post sector.
