Lynas Corp, an Australian miner, had approval to refine rare earth in Perth though chose to do so in Malaysia instead due to lower costs, Mashal Ahmad, managing director of Lynas Malaysia Sdn Bhd, told reporters today in the Southeast Asian nation’s Pahang state.

Malaysia’s Atomic Energy Licensing Board agreed to grant a temporary operating license to Lynas on February 2, though this hasn’t yet been issued.

Maximus Ongkili, the country’s minister of science, technology and innovation, held a hearing on April 17 after protestors concerned over health and safety issues called on the government to appeal that decision.
