Malaysia refugee solution a mistake for Aust, says Geneva scholar
One of the world’s pre-eminent migration experts has described the federal government’s Malaysia swap deal as a “Hail Mary” policy that relied on faith rather than experience, with no evidence that it would halt the surge in boat arrivals.
Khalid Koser, speaking at Sydney’s Lowy Institute for International Policy, where he is a non-resident fellow, said it was “irresponsible” of the government to rule out policies that in the past had proved effective.
