The director the of HCM City Bar Association reported on September 29 that about 60 lawyers had sent letters of withdrawal from the lawyers group after the Ministry of Justice banned civil servants from moonlighting as lawyers.
Almost the law-degree holders who withdrew from the association are civil servants, government officials, lecturers of HCM City Law University, the State Inspectorate College, or Political Science College. In addition, about 10 people who decided to quit their jobs for such state owned agencies applied to continue working as lawyers.
From October 1 2004, if any civil servant works as a lawyer or offers legal advice services outside their state office the Ministry of Justice will revoke their official work ID card.
