A conference announcing the situation of bird flu was jointly held on December 19 in Hanoi by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The conference was attended by all the embassies and representatives of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of many countries in Hanoi.
At the conference, Vietnam’s foreign affair ministry highly appreciated the support and assistance of representatives of foreign ministries of all other countries in fighting against the avian epidemic.
The deputy director of the centre for health and disease prevention Nguyen Van Binh reported that the bird flu has cooled down in the last six months with two cases infected with H5N1 avian virus and one death.
Binh also said that 97% of all infected cases in Vietnam is caused by consuming or contacting with diseased bird stocks. However, there hasn’t been any proof of human-on-human transmission pandemic. It is difficult to have infection of bird flu from poultry to human because Vietnam hasn’t seen any case of that kind of transmission among farmers, slaughter men or veterinary officials.
In regard to measures supporting foreigners living or working in Vietnam being suspected to have H5N1 avian virus infection, Binh said that the MoH already instructed hospitals to prepare for receiving and treatment of foreign patients and willing to transfer them to the best hospitals if necessary. In detail, there are two hospitals selected including the Hospital for Tropical Diseases of Hanoi for the north and the Hospital for Tropical Diseases of HCM City in the south.
