There has been a change of command for international forces in East Timor -and Australia’s defence force chief says things are looking up in the fledgling country.

Brigadier Bill Sowry has taken charge of the Australian-led International Stabilisation Force, replacing Brigadier Mark Holmes.

The Chief of the Australian Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, said things were going well in East Timor.

“The progress being made in East Timor is impressive,” he said.

“I am confident that under Brigadier Sowry’s leadership, the cooperative effort between the local security forces and the Australian and New Zealand troops will continue to bring stability to the people of that young.
