In the first six months of 2008, Vietnam's rice exports reached 2.514 million tonnes, increasing by only 138,000 tonnes or 5.8% in output but the export brought in a turnover of US$1.510 billion, up US$751 million or 9.9% against 2007 because the rice export price rose by 88% yoy earning an extra US$707 million,
The average price of rice for export in the first six months reached US$601 per tonne against US$314.4 per tonne in the same period in 2007 and US$275 in 2005.
While rice export turnover of previous years had been US$1.5 billion, but that of this year have help put Vietnam made rice into the list of top eight export items ranking after crude oil earning US$5.6 billion, apparel with export turnover of US$4.077 billion, footwear US$2.274 billion, seafood US$1.89 billion, and beyond wooden products with US$1.365 billion, computer and electronic appliances US$1.237 billion, and coffee US$1.181 billion.
