The Vietnamese catfish export steering board led by Deputy Minister Luong Le Phuong announced on Jun 24 that tra catfish export to Russia might bring in $1.3 billion against the expected of $1 billion given previously.

Duong Ngoc Minh, general director of Hung Vuong Seafood Joint Stock Co said the tra and basa catfish export would recover quickly from now on, especially in August when there are signs of increasing demands from importing markets such as Eastern Europe, Africa and others.

The board plans to visit Russia at the end of June to negotiate and sign export contracts with the expected export volume in July of 15,000 tonnes of tra and basa catfish and 70,000 tonnes up to the end of this year.

Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (Vasep) revealed that many seafood importing countries in the world have increased their import volume, for example, in Eastern European markets, purchase has accelerated four times as much as the same period last year, in Chile, Mexico and Peru, the purchase volume has doubled. It's considered as big chance for Vietnam's tra & basa catfish export products.

In the first five months of 2009, Vietnam's tra and basa catfish export volume was posted at $477 million, a decrease of 4 percent year-on-year. At that time, Vasep predicted the 2009 export value of this type of products may reach $1 billion only.

But now, the situation has changed with many advantages, so Vasep's set target of earning $1.3 billion of 2009 export turnover is considered reachable.
