Vietnam has exported around 3.6 million tonnes of rice during the first six months of this year, said Vietnam Food Association, or VFA.

Local enterprises have plans to ship around 650,000 tonnes to overseas markets in June, VFA said. The country till June 12 exported nearly 3.3 million tonnes of rice and reachedUS$1.3 billion in turnover.

Some localities said the country's commercial rice volume in 2009 is around five million tonnes, one million tonnes higher than earlier projected, due to burning harvests last year. Domestic exporters are envisaged to consume the rice volume within the rest of this year.

VFA said that local enterprises till the end of this month are keeping a rice stockpile of over 700,000 tonnes. The companies will have to buy just 700,000 tonnes more to achieve this year's export target of five million tonnes.

VFA suggested exporters to update information of local and foreign markets to ensure rice export management and purchase of rice from farmers following the government's policy.

However, the Ministry of Industry and Trade warned that Thailand and India may offload a huge volume of rice stockpile. As a result, international importers will delay rice purchases to expect lower prices.
