Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) recently announced that the government has approved a plan to import 280,000 tonnes of sugar in three phases to stabilise the sugar price in the market.
Accordingly, Vietnam will import 150,000 tonnes of sugar in the first phase, 100,000 tonnes in the second phase and 30,000 tonnes in the third phase.

According to Nguyen Thanh Bien, deputy minister of industry and trade, the imported sugar is to supply for dairy production factories and confectionery production factories.

The retail sugar price has doubled from 11,000-12,000 dong/kilogram to 20,000-21,000 dong per kilogram for three past months.

In 2009, the country imported 110,000 tonnes of sugar.
