Vietnam's shrimp export reaches over $1.67b in 2009

During the year 2009, Vietnam's shrimp export reached nearly 210,000 tonnes, earning an export turnover of over $1.67 billion, increasing 9.4 percent in quantity and 3 percent in value against previous year.

Japan, the US and Europe were still Vietnam's main buyers in 2009. In particular, in 2009, Vietnam's shrimp export turnover to the US market was over $395 million, down 15.4 percent year-on-year, leading a fall in market share from 28.7 percent in 2008 to 23.6 percent in 2009. The Japanese market maintained Vietnam's biggest shrimp buyer with nearly 57,000 tonnes and an export turnover of over $493 million. In 2009, export market share to Japanese market fell from 30.7 percent to 29.5 percent.

The European market saw a satisfactory growth in export turnover in 2009 with 41,000 tonnes of shrimp, earning $281 million, increasing 26.5 percent in quantity and over 20 percent in value year-on-year, bringing the export market share increase from 14.4 percent to 16.8 percent in 2009.

During last year, Chinese market accounted for 5.7 percent market share while 2008's figure was 3 percent.
In 2009, Vietnam's shrimp export turnover to Korean market was $107 million. Vietnam's export market share to the Korean market increased from 5.2 percent of 2008 to 6.4 percent in 2009.

Vietnam exported over 8,000 tonnes of shrimp to the Australian market, earning nearly $72 million, increasing 9.2 percent in quantity and 1.8 percent in value year-on-year.

As forecasted, Vietnam's shrimp export turnover could reach $1.4 billion in 2010.
