Malaysia leads foreign investors in Vietnam

Malaysia became the lead out of 40 nations and territories investing in Vietnam during the first nine months of 2008 thanks to the licensed US$9.8 billion steel project in the southern province of Ninh Thuan.

According to the Overseas Investment Department under the Ministry of Planning and Investment, in Jan-Sep, Malaysian enterprises have registered to invest US$14.8 billion for 37 projects in Vietnam, accounting for 4.1% in project numbers and over 26.4% in the pledged foreign capital.

To date, Malaysian investors have invested in many big projects in Vietnam such as the Berjaya Land Bhd's US$3.5 billion project to build a university urban area in HCM City, another project valued at US$930 million of Berjaya Land Bhd to build Vietnam Finance Centre in HCM City's Dist 10, Bien Hoa City Centre project capitalised at US$230 million and Thach Ban new city project in Hanoi with the total investment capital of US$500 million. Meanwhile, Gamuda Group also has a US$233 million project on building a wastewater treatment factory in southern Hanoi.

In July, representatives from Malaysia's many big enterprises accompanied with the minister of Industry and Foreign Trade of Malaysia, Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin in the Vietnam visit to seek investment and business opportunities in Vietnam.
