UOG joins Hanoi economic conference

The Hanoi 2008 International Conference on Business, Economics and Information Technology is currently being held in Hanoi, North Vietnam.

The University of Guam's School of Business and Public Administration is the lead organiser and sponsor and is joined by Alfred University's College of Business in New York, Penn State Altoona's Division of Business and Engineering in Pennsylvania, and the Vietnam National University's Hanoi School of Business.

"The Asia-Pacific region is the most exciting region in the world because of the economic growth in the region, and because of the expectation of the military build-up on island," said Dr Claret Ruane, Economics faculty member at the University of Guam and conference organiser.

"Part of what is driving me is that there is so much to learn from the region. This is also an opportunity to share information about Guam as a US Territory and its unique culture and identity. My expectation is for the conference to become an annual event, and I am looking at holding it in Japan next year," said Dr Jim Taylor, UOG Finance faculty member, who is the conference co-chair.

The conference is an international event, with 70 participants coming from Guam, mainland US, and 9 other countries (Vietnam, Japan, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Australia, and Kyrgysstan).

Among the participants are Dr Noguchi of Nagoya University and Dr Suzuki of Kobe University who are partners with the University of Guam School of Business and Public Administration in the Guam International Accounting Forum.

The Hanoi 2008 International Conference provides a venue for scholarly interactions among academics, researchers, students, and representatives from industry and government.

The theme this year is the economic, social, political and cultural environments in which today's businesses operate.

This conference is part of the international conference series that included those held in Wuhan, China (annually since 2001), Quito, Ecuador (2003), Manila, Philippines (2005), Guam (2006) and a planned future conference for Istanbul, Turkey.

What makes this conference unique is the study tour available for participants, which is a wonderful opportunity for faculty and students to gain greater understanding of the international economy and international business and experiencing the environment, people, cultures and customs of Vietnam, both north and south.
