Twelve Vietnamese students on July 18 were awarded with full scholarships totalling US$1.47 million funded by the Singaporean government.
The students, including seven from Hanoi-based universities and five from HCM City, will leave for Singapore in late July to pursue three-or four-year undergraduate degrees either at the National University of Singapore, the Singapore Nanyang Technological University or the Singapore Management University.
The Singaporean scholarships are a government-to-government scheme. Scholars are selected on the basis of their academic merit, leadership qualities and their potential to contribute to community development in their home countries.
In December 1998, when Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) member countries were facing difficulties due to the Asian financial crisis, the Singaporean government announced that Singapore would offer undergraduate scholarships to Asean students.
Since its inception, there have been 144 Singapore Scholarship recipients from Vietnam, including the 12 students selected for this year.
