Vietnam will closely cooperate with Japan to bring to light and properly handle a case in which four former officials of Japan's Pacific Consultants International (PCI) allegedly bribed Vietnamese officials to win the East-West Highway contract in HCM City, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Dung.
Dung made the statement at a press briefing in Hanoi on August 28 following the news that the Japanese authorities issued a decision on August 25 to prosecute the four PCI officials.
"The consistent policy of the Vietnamese Party and State is to combat corruption. Anyone involved in bribery and corruption will be strictly dealt with according to the law," said Dung.
He said that the Vietnamese government and people have highly valued and treasured the official development assistance (ODA) granted to Vietnam by foreign countries, including Japan. Vietnam has effectively managed and used ODA sources to carry out socio-economic development projects, with a particular focus on preventing waste and corruption, said Dung.
According to Dung, relevant Vietnamese agencies received Japan's proposal for cooperation on August 21 and they are investigating the case.
Vietnam will work closely with Japan to properly handle the case in line with Vietnamese laws and without creating any negative impact on ODA sources and bilateral relations, said Dung.
