Inspectors of the HCM City health department has launched an investigation into a boy's death at a local hospital after a gastric endoscopy early this week.

Nguyen Du Thinh, 7, died after receiving a 30 mg injection of ketamine anesthetic and undergoing a gastric endoscopy at Hoan My Hospital in HCM City last Sunday.

The inspectors have requested the hospital to provide the qualifications of the involved doctors and submit a report about the anesthetic treatment and procedure applied on the patient.

Local police seized medical tools and the remaining ketamine anesthetic.

They also asked An Binh Hospital to carry out an autopsy.

According to Dong Ngoc Khanh, director of Hoan My Hospital, within one minute of being injected with the anesthetic and internally probed, the oxygen in the patient's brain dropped and his heart stopped beating.

Despite the efforts of ten doctors at the hospital, the patient passed away.

The usage of ketamine anesthetic for endoscopy and broken bones setting is a common procedure, according to health specialists.

Thinh was a young chess talent from the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak who had just participated in a recent tournament held in Vung Tau City.
