Southern province suspends vaccines after infant complications

The Ca Mau Health Department has instructed health centres under its governance to halt the use of two vaccines after eight vaccinated infants suffered respiratory failure 10 days ago at a local hospital.
The two vaccines against hepatitis-B and tuberculosis are presently preserved under regulated conditions, pending results from an investigation into the cause of the complications, department head Huynh Trung Kien said last Friday.
The hepatitis-B vaccine belongs to the B-BR-020606 batch produced by the HCM City Pasteur Institute, while the TB vaccine is of the 0407A batch produced by the Hanoi-based Co for Vaccine and Biological Production 1.
Both batches are valid until June next year.
The Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, the Pasteur Institute and local health agencies are conducting the investigation which was launched early last week.
The infants have recovered from complications.
Seven have been sent home while one remains under treatment for another disease at the Ca Mau Maternal Hospital.
Initial investigations showed the hospital had complied with vaccination procedures, Kien said last week.
The infants were healthy at the time of injection, according to hospital director Le Thang.
The vaccines had been used on hundreds of infants without any complications over a two-week period, Thang said.
