Moto wins in Vietnam

Motorola announced contracts worth US$28 million with Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications (VNPT) Group to expand VinaPhone's GSM network in Vietnam's Southeast and Southern Central provinces. It is Motorola's third GSM network expansion project with VinaPhone in less than a year. The contracts further strengthen the cooperation between Motorola and VNPT that began more than a decade ago.

Motorola will provide network equipment, software and services to expand the GSM network for VinaPhone, a subsidiary of VNPT, to cover suburban and rural areas of Vietnam's Southeast and Southern Central provinces. The new network will offer high quality and reliable voice and data services for subscribers, which is especially important for some rural areas that have never had mobile telecommunications services before. Shipment of the equipment will begin in Q4 2008.

"We are delighted that Motorola is collaborating with VinaPhone to expand the GSM network in the Southern provinces of Vietnam following the recent expansion project in the Northern provinces. These contracts reinforce Motorola as a market leader in GSM technology. The long-term collaboration with VinaPhone allows us to share our knowledge and experience in delivering high quality mobile services in Vietnam," said Dr Ray Owen, general director of Motorola Vietnam Telecommunications Company.

"Through our state-of-the-art technologies and solutions, Motorola is committed to deploying reliable and scalable telecommunications networks for VinaPhone, enabling them to capture new business opportunities and differentiate themselves from their competitors," added Dr Owen.

Motorola and VinaPhone signed the first contract to expand and enhance VinaPhone's GSM network in Vietnam's major cities in November 2007and the second contract to expand the network to the 12 Northern provinces in June 2008. The rapid development of Vietnam's mobile network is a result of the country's growing economy and increasing demand for telecommunications services.

VinaPhone currently provides coverage in 63 provinces and cities in Vietnam and has links with mobile operators in more than 60 countries and governed territories.
