It’s predicted that the third generation of Telecommunication Technology (Technology 3G) would be in use in Vietnam in June 2009. Vietnamese mobile phone subscribers would benefit from high-speed mobile telecom services and followed by the introduction of new services.

And domestic advertising industry would have a brand new outlet channel to broaden access to customers.

The number of mobile phone users in the main cities of Vietnam is high with about 74 percent of residents [adults] in HCM City and Hanoi having a personal mobile phone. According to research of Nielsen’s Mobile Insights Centre, about one third of the Indian population and nearly a half of Chinese people own a cell phone.

Aaron Cross, Nielson’s general manager in Vietnam explained that Vietnam was a young country which 54 percent of the population was under 24, therefore the youth always desired for new and updated technologies and they easily get used to online contacts. It’s no doubt that Internet access rate in Vietnam is much higher than other nearby countries.

In addition, Vietnam’s average household income gradually increased recently, that makes high consumption in goods and services of Vietnamese people, especially in mobile phone and Internet.

Despite the world economic recession, Vietnamese people are still optimistic about domestic economic growth prospects so that’s a good sign for new tech products to take off in the market.

According to Nielsen’s 2008 survey of the consumer confidence index, after paying all personal bills, Vietnamese people tend to spend idle cash on new tech products. So 3G services providers could expect widespread attention from Vietnamese consumers with this new technology.

The mobile phone network providers in Vietnam recently have committed to invest $2 billion in the first three years to introduce 3G technology with their launch of over 30,000 transmitting stations all over the country.

It’s expected that 3G technology up to 2010 would bring in about 41 percent of the total value of wireless technologies.

According to Mobile Insights Vietnam 2008 report, conducted by Nielsen Corp, cell phone users range from all groups of age, especially group of 25-34. Most of Vietnamese mobile phone subscribers said they use their cell phones for working purposes and their monthly call charges was under 200,000 dong.

Those young users with considerate monthly income would use their mobile phones for other popular data services such as downloading melodies, ring tones and background images.

The survey results show that 20-22 percent of mobile phone subscribers are fashion followers, and these customers care much about famous trademarks, logos and updated technologies.

3G technology has been introduced to Vietnam by not only mobile network providers but also by high speed and wide-band Internet ones. And it’s considered as a good, effective advertisement and marketing channel to mobile phone subscribers in Vietnam.
