Total number of new telephone subscribers in January reached 4.9 million, growing by 145.3 percent year-on-year, general Statistic Office (GSO) estimated.
In which, the number of new fixed telephone subscribers gained 560,000, surging 47.4 percent while that of mobile subscribers accounted for 4.3 million, jumping 168.6 percent from last January.
Till the end of January 2010, the country's total telephone subscribers have achieved 135.3 million, up 62.3 percent, including 19.6 million of fixed subscribers (a year-on-year rise of 35.3 percent) and 115.7 million of mobile subscribers, soaring by 68 percent and higher six times than the volume of fixed subscribers.
GSO also reported, total turnover from post and telecommunication this month grew by 69.8 percent y-o-y to 9.9 trillion dong.
Among these, Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Group (VNPT) accounted for 71.5 million subscribers including 11.8 million of fixed subscribers and 59.7 million of mobile subscribers. A strong increase in number of mobile subscribers comes from the promotion policies and charge reduction policies of networks, for example Viettel discounted 15-20 percent for all call charges.
The volume of mobile subscribers could increase more strongly in the near future because Viettel fired the charge reduction race whereby other providers also plan to cut call charges to attract new subscribers.
Lately, three giants Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone proposed Ministry of Information and Communication to lengthen the prefix 09x for the development of subscribers and services along with the launching of 3G technology.
Furthermore, the number of wideband internet subscribers in Vietnam is estimated at 3.1 million in January 2010, soaring by 45.8 percent year-on-year.
