Military-run Viettel Telecom Monday began its latest sale of the iPhone 3GS 16GB though Apple Inc, the US manufacturer of the smartphone, has stopped making it since unveiling the next version recently.

At 13.6 million dong and 14.2 million, the normal and international versions are now 1 million dong cheaper than when they first hit the market in March.

VinaPhone, the other official distributor of the gadget in Vietnam, is poised to begin its sales next week but has yet to announce any price cut.

Demand for the iPhone 3GS has slumped since Apple launched the iPhone 4 on June 24 and stopped manufacturing the former.

Online technology forums and communities in Vietnam suspect Viettel's consignment is sourced from stockpiles.

VinaPhone and Viettel reportedly sold out the 15,000 iPhones in the first consignment in March, with the former offering promotions and the latter cutting prices.

The two are negotiating with Apple to import the iPhone 4 by September.
