State-owned Electricity of Vietnam Group, or EVN, plans to build four hydropower plants in Laos that will begin operations by 2015, a company executive said Friday.

The plants -Nam Et 1 with a generation capacity of 140 megawatts, Nam Et 2 with 170 MW, Nam Et 3 with 110 MW and Nam Kong with 60 MW -will be located in the central region of Laos, said the official with EVN's headquarters, declining to be named.

"EVN will build the plants and buy all the electricity, about 2 billion kilowatt hours a year, for use in Vietnam," he told Dow Jones Newswires.

He didn't give a timetable or financial details for the construction of the plants.

Under an agreement signed by the two governments, Vietnamese companies will invest in building hydropower plants with a total generation capacity of 3,000 MW to 5,000 MW by 2020, the official said.

Currently, Vietnamese companies are building the first plant, named Sekaman 3, with a capacity of 250 MW at a cost of US$273 million for operation by 2010. EVN has a stake in the project.
