APM Terminals has signed an agreement to form a joint venture with Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group subsidiary, Pharung Shipyard Company, to develop a container terminal at Dinh Vu Industrial Zone.

The joint venture plans to start work on a two-berth, 630m facility with 24 hectares of yard space later this year, with operation targeted to start by late 2010.

"The development of the facility in Dinh Vu will help meet the demand for a modern, efficient port and intermodal facilities for the growing and increasingly important role of Vietnam in the global economy," said Martin Gaard Christiansen, APM Terminals' vice president for Asia.

The terminal will serve the capital of Hanoi and the Red River Delta region. It will be the first internationally run terminal in the north of Vietnam.

Most of the terminals in and around Hai Phong are highly draught restricted and only able to handle vessels of around 700 teu in capacity.

Dinh Vu will be APM Terminals' second facility in Vietnam. APM Terminals has joint venture with Saigon Port and Vinalines to develop a deepwater container port at Cai Mep, near HCM City.

The Cai Mep International Terminal's official opening is planned for the fourth quarter of 2010.
