Cai Lan International Container Port Co has received a license to invest an extra US$120 million to build three more piers in Cai Lan Port in the northeastern province of Quang Ninh.
The company said in a statement last week that the three-phase project could be up and running by 2014.
In the first phase that lasts until 2011, the project will build 303 metres of pier and service facilities. After completion, the piers will be able to accommodate container ships of 40,000 dwt.
The next three-year phase will see construction of an additional 261 metres of pier. The final phase is expected to wrap up the development of the three piers by2014.
As planned, the container port can handle 230,000 TEUs of cargo and 100,000 tonnes of other goods by 2011 and three-years after that, the cargo handling capacity will rise to 760,000 TEUs.
Cai Lan International Container Port Co is a joint venture between the Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines), Quang Ninh Port and SSA Holdings International Vietnam, a unit of the US firm SSA Marine.
In late 2006, the three companies signed an agreement to establish a joint venture to develop and operate container terminals at Cai Lan Port in Quang Ninh. The pact paved the way for the three parties to finalise the joint venture agreement to develop and operate piers 2, 3 and 4.
Cai Lan Port's operational pier one was built in 2003. Although the port was designed for ships of 40,000 dwt but only smaller ships with a maximum capacity of 15,000 dwt can enter the port because of delays in riverbed dredging.
Vinalines and SSA Marine earlier signed an agreement to develop and operate logistics operations throughout Vietnam, such as world-class container handling services, rail ramps, and off-dockyards.
With experience in seaport development and operations around the world, SSA Maritime is responsible for taking care of business partners. It also assists the development of logistics systems for cargo transport by railway and motorway from local ports to the border gates with China in Lang Son and Lao Cai provinces.
