Police seize Central Highlands cannabis crop

Police in Gia Lai Province on Monday discovered a man growing cannabis on his property in Chu Se District's Ia Le Commune, a police source said Wednesday.

Vu Van Duc, 43, was arrested and nearly 2.5 tonnes of cannabis were confiscated in the biggest ever cannabis haul in the Central Highlands.

Police are still searching for a number of people who fled after being caught trying to cut down the plants.

Police said they found thousands of cannabis plants on a half hectare plot at Phu Binh Hamlet in Ia Le Commune.

Some of the plants were two metres high with stems the size of a man's wrist.

Earlier on Monday, police of Chu Se District nabbed Nguyen Thi Bich from HCM City as she allegedly bought cannabis from Duc's brother, Vu Van Chuong.

In the raid, police seized two kilograms of dry cannabis flowers, and leaves, a motorbike and 14.5 million dong (US$874) in cash from the illegal trading but Chuong had managed to escape.

Bich confessed she bought the cannabis from Chuong for 850,000 dong (US$51.30) a kilogram.

Police said Duc had offered a bribe of 100 million dong (US$6,000) to police, adding that he had previously offered 35 million dong (US$2,100) and four taels of gold to commune police chief Nguyen Dinh Duc.

Deputy chief police of Chu Se District, Phan Anh Tuan, said Duc used a self-designed watering system and some substances believed to be growth-promoting chemicals for the cannabis plants.

Tuan said the cannabis seeds may have been smuggled from Cambodia.
