Chinese counterfeit dong trafficker sentenced to death

A court in southern Vietnam has sentenced a Chinese woman to death for trafficking 4.7 billion dong (US$284,000) of counterfeit money from China, an official said Wednesday.

The People's Court of Tien Giang province, 60 kilometres southwest of HCM City, sentenced Guo Jin Hua, 65, on Tuesday after a two week trial, said Dang Quang Minh, head of the province's Social Crime Investigation Department.

"This is the largest counterfeit money case in several years with the involvement of a foreigner," Minh told Dow Jones Newswires.

The court also sentenced Vietnamese man Tran Van Trieu, 23, to life imprisonment and 29 other accomplices of the ring to between six and 23 years in prison.

According to the court indictment, the ring trafficked counterfeit dong to southern Vietnamese provinces between May 2005 and June 2007, when the ring was busted.

Vietnam has this year sentenced at least four foreigners to death, mostly on charges of trafficking heroin. The government doesn't release figures on the number of executions.
